Chapter 15: Eight Thousand During Internship, Fifteen Thousand Upon Confirmation
Shi Yi thought this man was here to have his fortune told as well, and couldn't help but sigh.
"Uncle, you’re a police officer, yet you don’t know it’s illegal to track down someone’s address without permission? That’s an invasion of privacy. Besides, I’ve already said I only tell fortunes under the overpass, not at home."
She spoke with calm indifference.
Hearing this, the middle-aged man smiled softly.
"Forgive me for the intrusion. Let me introduce myself—my name is Wang Zhiyuan, but you can call me Uncle Wang. I’m the director of Bureau 857. I’m not here for a fortune-telling today, but to invite you to join us and become our colleague."
Wang Zhiyuan was straightforward, stating his purpose without any pretense.
Shi Yi was slightly surprised by his words, and a trace of wariness flickered in her eyes.
"Your name is Shi Yi. You grew up without parents and were raised by your master, who passed away in an accident two years ago. Since then, you’ve made a living telling fortunes under the overpass. Not long after, you were diagnosed with ALS, and now you count your days on your fingers."
"Just a few days ago, you saved a family of three by chance. The video went viral online, and now crowds come seeking your fortune-telling. Unable to cope, you’ve been hiding at home."
Wang Zhiyuan’s tone was measured, his expression gentle and composed.
Shi Yi raised an eyebrow.
"Seems you’ve done your homework. You investigated me beforehand, didn’t you?"
She was not pleased; she disliked having her life scrutinized so freely. Intentional or not, it was still an invasion of her privacy.
Wang Zhiyuan anticipated her reaction. He quickly pulled out a stack of brochures from his briefcase and apologized.
"I know it’s excessive, but it’s routine procedure for our bureau. Rest assured, apart from the basic information, we haven’t looked into anything else."
"Our Bureau 857 isn’t an ordinary police station—it’s a special abilities bureau under the highest authority."
"You can think of it as an official agency composed of people with special abilities, handling unusual and difficult cases. Here’s our bureau’s manual. Take a look."
With that, Wang Zhiyuan slid a slim manual across the table to Shi Yi.
She eyed it suspiciously, then opened it directly.
On the very first page, she was greeted by that annoyingly handsome face—Gu Hansheng!
Shi Yi was taken aback. "He..."
Wang Zhiyuan chuckled.
"I figured you two have already met. He lives right across from you, doesn’t he?"
"He’s our team leader at Bureau 857. He has millions of followers online. Although our bureau is under the highest authority, for appearances’ sake we operate as a regular police station serving the public."
Last year, Gu Hansheng took first place in both the physical fitness competition and the sharpshooter contest, and because he’s so good-looking and comes from money, he unexpectedly became an internet sensation.
Shi Yi nodded lightly and turned to the later pages of the manual.
The first few introduced Bureau 857’s team members; the rest described the environment and honors of the bureau. Nothing particularly special, and after reading, Shi Yi set it aside.
She couldn’t quite figure it out.
"Why are you seeking me out?"
Wang Zhiyuan took a sip of ice-cold cola from the fridge, shivering from the chill, and quickly set it aside.
"We saw your viral video online. You have the ability to foresee crime and misfortune, don’t you?"
Faced with the truth, Shi Yi knew that as a special bureau, they would have found out everything about her. She didn’t bother to deny it and nodded.
"This ability is extremely valuable to us. After learning about your power, we observed you for a while."
"We know you seem aloof, but you help the weak and have a sincere, kind heart. That’s exactly the kind of person we need at Bureau 857. So we sincerely invite you to join us."
Shi Yi felt a little embarrassed at the direct praise.
She frowned, hesitating as she stared at the manual.
She’d never imagined working for a police bureau or serving the country. She’d thought her life would be spent telling fortunes beneath the overpass, scraping by day by day, and that would be it.
But ever since she’d gained the system and the ability to foresee crime, not only had she become famous online—even the authorities were coming to recruit her.
The thought left her a little lost, uncertain what the future held.
Wang Zhiyuan saw her conflicted expression and didn’t seem surprised.
He continued in a leisurely tone, "At Bureau 857, we work from ten to four, weekends off, paid holidays, starting salary during probation is eight thousand, fifteen thousand after becoming permanent, with full benefits, lunch provided, and a transportation allowance. Each member gets a car and a dormitory after joining the bureau, though..."
He glanced around her spacious home and smiled.
"I suppose you won’t need our dormitory, but it’ll still be reserved for you. If you work overtime, you’re paid triple the normal rate—no one will be shortchanged."
Shi Yi’s eyes instantly lit up.
Eight thousand during probation, full benefits, meals provided...
Heavens, where could she find a job like that?
She was tempted.
Wang Zhiyuan pressed his advantage.
"Not only that, but every time we go on assignment, successful completion earns a bonus—anywhere from twenty thousand to three hundred thousand, after tax, depending on the difficulty."
Shi Yi’s eyes grew wider.
A post-tax bonus of fifty to three hundred thousand!
Heavens, wouldn’t she soon be at the peak of her life?
This job was far better than anything written in criminal law.
Only a fool would turn down such an opportunity!
She had to admit, she was utterly dazzled by the salary and benefits.
Since becoming famous, she hadn’t been able to set up her fortune-telling stall and had no income.
This job was a godsend.
Without further hesitation, she looked at Wang Zhiyuan.
"I’ll do it."
Wang Zhiyuan saw her flushed, excited face and smiled.
He’d thought he’d have to do more persuading, but it turned out all it took was the promise of a good salary to bring her in.
He quickly pulled a contract from his bag.
"In that case, let’s sign the contract."
"So soon?" Shi Yi was surprised.
Of course—he was afraid she’d change her mind.
But Shi Yi felt the same. With such great terms, she needed to nail it down quickly—just in case Wang Zhiyuan changed his mind.
Both of them were afraid the other would back out.
