Chapter 10: Shi Yi Becomes Famous
Gu Hansheng was somewhat surprised, but considering his own position, he nodded in understanding.
“Do you need me to take you to the hospital?”
At that moment, Liang Zhuoqun’s face was pale. The policeman who wasn’t occupied quickly stepped forward to support Liang Zhuoqun’s arm.
“Let’s take the captain to the hospital.”
Fortunately, there was a hospital near their precinct, open twenty-four hours a day, where he could receive treatment.
Liang Zhuoqun pressed hard on his bleeding arm and glanced at Gu Hansheng.
“If I survived this time, it’s thanks to that young girl. Where is she? I want to thank her in person.”
Speaking of this, Liang Zhuoqun felt a pang of guilt. When they left earlier, Shi Yi had repeatedly warned him not to take shortcuts just to save time after work. Yet he had carelessly forgotten her advice and insisted on going his own way, taking the shortcut. This gave the recently released criminal the perfect opportunity.
Gu Hansheng looked around. “Oh, you mean the little fortune-teller? She must have gone to retrieve her tricycle.”
Gu Hansheng clapped his hands, amused by the thought.
“Uncle Liang, are you alright?” As if summoned by mention, Shi Yi rode her tricycle to the alley’s entrance, hurried over, and looked anxiously at Liang Zhuoqun’s bleeding arm.
Liang Zhuoqun smiled at Shi Yi. “I’m fine, just a minor injury. But thank you for what you did today.”
Shi Yi felt a bit embarrassed; she hadn’t really helped much and almost got herself into trouble as well.
“No need. Your arm will probably need stitches, so you’d better get to the hospital quickly.” Shi Yi stepped forward and gently examined the wound peeking through his fingers, shocked by the severity. The cut was deep enough to expose the bone, and Liang Zhuoqun was already feeling dizzy—clearly from blood loss.
He could no longer afford to chat with Shi Yi and hurried to follow the police to the nearby hospital.
“Little fortune-teller, not bad—risking your neck for others. Next time, don’t be so reckless and try to take on the impossible,” Gu Hansheng leaned lazily against the alley wall.
“You’re lucky it was me you ran into. If it had been anyone else, you’d already be meeting your ancestors.”
Shi Yi turned to meet Gu Hansheng’s gaze, frowning deeply.
What was with this man?
So handsome, yet his words were so unpleasant.
Regardless, he had saved her and Liang Zhuoqun. Shi Yi was always clear about gratitude and grudges; a few harsh words wouldn’t make her ignore the debt she owed for her life.
Shi Yi replied dryly, “…Thank you.”
Without another glance at Gu Hansheng, she strode out of the alley and climbed onto her tricycle.
Gu Hansheng, believing he’d struck a charming pose, was surprised when the girl ignored him completely. He stared after her, calling out, “Don’t you know who I am?”
Shi Yi found his question odd. “Do I need to know? What, are you some famous celebrity?”
She looked at him with earnest curiosity.
“Damn…” Gu Hansheng chuckled in exasperation. Was she mocking him? But judging by her sincere expression, it didn’t seem so.
He opened his mouth, swallowing his frustration.
“Forget it, I won’t argue with you.”
“…You’re strange.”
Shi Yi muttered, then mounted her tricycle and left without a backward glance.
“Well, this is interesting.” Gu Hansheng stood with hands on his hips, watching her receding figure.
That night, Shi Yi dug out Liang Zhuoqun’s business card and called to ask about his wound. By then, she was home, and Liang Zhuoqun had just gotten his stitches at the hospital and was out of danger.
Shi Yi finally felt relieved.
[Ding—]
[Congratulations, host, your task has been successfully completed.]
[You have gained another year of life. Please continue the good work.]
As soon as the call ended, a mechanical voice sounded in her mind.
“Congratulations, congratulations, the mission is finally a success. At least your efforts were not wasted.”
The voice of the White Tiger echoed lazily in Shi Yi’s mind.
Shi Yi was wide awake now, immersed in the joy of completing her task.
“That’s wonderful, I now have two years of life left. Thank you, Big Yellow.”
As she gazed at the lively calico cat in her mind, Shi Yi couldn’t help but smile, her mood brightening.
At her words, the White Tiger bristled.
“Who are you calling Big Yellow? Who’s Big Yellow?!”
Shi Yi touched her nose sheepishly.
“I am the White Tiger, one of the Four Divine Beasts—not your village’s Big Yellow!”
Shi Yi found it amusing, watching the White Tiger’s agitated expression. The yellow patch on its nose and mouth seemed even more pronounced, making it look quite comical.
“Alright, Big Yellow…”
Shi Yi smiled quietly, feeling quite content.
The White Tiger deflated, glancing at its pink paw pads.
“I’m a tiger, not a cat!”
Looking at its petite form—well, even it couldn’t deny the resemblance.
The White Tiger resigned itself and turned its back on Shi Yi, sulking.
Shi Yi, still in good spirits, slept soundly until morning.
The next day, Shi Yi rose as usual and tidied up her small stall, preparing to set out for her usual spot beneath the overpass. This routine had become a part of her daily life.
Arriving at her familiar stall, Shi Yi unloaded her goods from the tricycle and arranged them neatly. She settled into her chair and, as usual, ordered a cup of coconut juice.
“Auntie Li, one coconut juice please.”
It was hot, and the vendors around her were fanning themselves and sipping cold drinks.
Auntie Li, who sold cold beverages, was watching something on her phone. Seeing Shi Yi arrive, she hurried over with a cup of coconut juice, brimming with excitement.
“Shi Yi, look at this video—doesn’t it talk about you? You’re amazing, saving a whole family! Such kindness! I never thought you really could tell fortunes—we all thought you were a fraud!”
Auntie Li eagerly thrust her phone in front of Shi Yi.
Shi Yi was puzzled. “What video?”
“Your story has spread online. You’re famous now!”
Auntie Li grinned and placed the coconut juice on Shi Yi’s stall, handing her the phone. Shi Yi was stunned for a moment, but when she saw the video on the screen, she frowned.
The incident from two days ago—the rescue of Zhao Lingling—had been made into a video and posted online. The reporter even interviewed Zhao Yong, who mentioned Shi Yi saving their family of three.
At the end of the video, there was a shot of Shi Yi’s stall under the overpass. Her striking lake-blue hair was zoomed in and highlighted, making her stand out conspicuously.
