Chapter 72: Heaven’s Net Is Vast, Yet None Escape
"Ah..." The man let out a miserable scream and collapsed to the ground. Now, only three people were still standing. In other words, there had been five people attacking Beast earlier.
Just as that man fell, Beast thrust the half-broken wooden stick in his hand toward another man's abdomen. This one too failed to dodge in time and was stabbed by Beast. Gripped by the pain, he clutched his stomach and fell.
At that moment, Beast also felt a sharp pain—the man who had previously seized half of the wooden stick, imitating Beast's earlier move, stabbed the stick directly into Beast's abdomen. Since Beast had been on the offensive, he hadn't had time to defend himself.
But right then, Beast seized the man's arm with one hand, and, facing him with a ferocious grin, rammed his forehead into the man's head. Another one fainted; it turned out Beast's head was harder after all.
After the man fell, Beast pulled the bloodied stick from his own abdomen, grasped it in one hand, and coldly swept his gaze to the last person standing.
That man, cowed by Beast's menacing stare, froze for a second, then dropped his stick and bolted into the distance. But at that moment, a large group of people came running from afar. Leading them was Xiaoxue's father and one of her classmates. Behind them was a large crowd, each holding something in their hands.
In the end, the burly man was caught. As the group arrived, the other four were also subdued. Only when they came closer did Beast realize there were two young police officers among them.
Xiaoxue hurried to Beast’s side and supported his less injured arm. "Uncle Wang, are you alright?"
Beast ignored Xiaoxue, instead looking at the boy who had come with them. "Kid, do you live nearby?"
"He doesn’t," Xiaoxue replied before the boy could answer. "I just happened to run into him on my way back, so—" Before she could finish, Beast wrenched his arm free from Xiaoxue's grasp and, gripping the bloodied stick, lunged at the boy.
The boy's eyes widened in shock, but his face remained calm. He sidestepped neatly, avoiding Beast’s attack, then turned to him and said, "Sir, what are you doing?"
Beast sneered. "You were the one behind all this, weren’t you?"
The boy replied, surprised, "Sir, what are you talking about?"
Beast said, "You followed me before. When you arrived here, all five of them looked at you. There must be a connection between you. And Xiaoxue said you don’t live nearby, so why are you here so late?"
The boy met his gaze steadily. "Must be a coincidence. As for why I’m here, well, to tell the truth—I like Xiaoxue."
His unwavering expression almost made one believe he truly had nothing to do with all this.
"You like Xiaoxue? Like her enough to send your own men to harass her so you could play the hero?" Beast gave a cold laugh. "Birds leave their song, snow leaves its trace. If they’re your men, even if they won’t betray you, there are a thousand, ten thousand ways to find out the truth. Can you be sure that no one knows about every meeting between you and them? And if you don’t know them, then there shouldn’t be any of your fingerprints or DNA on them, right? But can you be sure of that?"
Beast spoke this way because two of the five who had attacked him were the same men who had harassed Xiaoxue before. When they saw Beast, they had left, but now, not long after, they had turned up again.
Hearing Beast’s words, the boy’s expression darkened, though he said nothing.
Beast continued, "Heaven’s net is vast, none can escape. You dodged my attack just now, which proves you’re skilled. If you really wanted to run, even with all these people here, you’d probably get away. But think carefully—if you run, you’ll only prove your guilt. If you stay and your men don’t betray you, odds are you won’t be in much trouble."
Beast’s words completely extinguished any thought the boy had of escape. He knew that no matter how strong he was, he was no match for the power of the state. In today's society, if someone truly wanted to find you, even if you hid in the remotest mountains or forests, they would still drag you out.
In the end, the boy and the five men were all escorted to the police station by the officers who had arrived. As for Beast, when the ambulance arrived, he boarded it.
"My god, this patient..." The nurse on the ambulance glanced at Beast, her face filled with shock.
Beast’s abdominal wound was bleeding profusely. Perhaps because of his body fat, he was bleeding a bit less than most people would. One of his hands, the less injured, was slick with blood, while the other not only bled but hung limp as if it were a balloon filled with lead.
In addition, from his head, blood streaked through his hair—he’d taken several blows both given and received.
The nurses had seen injuries like Beast’s before, but usually, people in that condition would have already lost consciousness. Beast, though not in good shape, didn’t look as if he would faint anytime soon.
In the end, the nurse merely treated the wounds on Beast’s abdomen and head; as for his arms, she left them alone. After all, they couldn’t be sure what else might be wrong, and as nurses, not doctors, there were things they dared not attempt.
With the sound of sirens, the ambulance sped straight to the hospital. Perhaps because it was an emergency, they arrived swiftly at the hospital entrance. Since Beast was still able to walk, they didn’t carry him in, but let him walk in himself.
Once inside, the leading nurse said to Beast and the others, "The patient comes with me to see the doctor, family members please pay the deposit first."
