Chapter 154: Overpowered Death Shockwave
Until tiny cracks began to spread across the barrel of the bio-cannon at Maildramon's waist. This meant that the energy contained within was reaching a point where even the bio-cannon itself could no longer contain it. If Maildramon did not strike immediately, the energy would detonate from within the weapon. When that happened, it would not be Maildramon destroying Petermamon, but Maildramon destroying Maildramon.
"Alas..." Seeing this, Maildramon let out a soft sigh. Aware of the situation, and though it had not reached the ideal energy threshold he desired, he had no choice left but to attack.
"Boom!" In an instant, two brilliant beams of light shot directly from the bio-cannon at Maildramon's waist, hurtling toward Petermamon below. Everyone watching this scene wore a silent, grim expression.
To be honest, could they execute over-powered class attacks?
Yes.
An over-powered attack was simple in principle: one merely had to continuously gather digital energy and then release it. That was all. However, such an attack was usually reserved only for testing the absolute limits of one's own power.
Could an over-powered attack be used in actual combat?
Yes, but the difficulty was immense!
The greatest challenge of using an over-powered attack in combat was that the opponent was not a stationary target. A technique of this magnitude required a lengthy charging time before it could be fired, and during such a prolonged duration, the opponent would have ample opportunity to beat you into submission.
Therefore, if one wished to employ an over-powered attack, the primary prerequisite was to prevent the enemy from interrupting the process. From this premise, two distinct branches of strategy emerged.
The first was to incapacitate the enemy to the point of near-death, stripping them of any ability to retaliate, thereby allowing you to charge your attack for as long as you pleased. Yet, if the opponent was already on the verge of death and could be obliterated by the slightest touch, why waste time charging a massive attack carrying ten thousand points of damage just to finish them off?
Aside from the excessive waste of surplus energy, what if the process took too long and unforeseen complications arose? What if the dying Digimon dragged you down with them in a desperate mutual destruction? Wouldn't that result in a net loss?
The second approach was to immobilize the enemy. How to restrain them, and for how long, was the critical factor. If you managed to bind someone, but could only hold them for a single second while your charged attack required ten seconds to unleash, would you waste that precious restraint window on charging? Of course not!
Thus, under normal circumstances, even if an enemy was successfully bound, very few would choose a charged attack, simply to defeat the foe before the restraints broke away. Unless one was absolutely certain the enemy could not break free.
Yet, in the vast majority of cases, such absolute certainty was impossible. The rare instances where one could be one hundred percent sure were, by definition, exceedingly rare.
Regardless of the odds, Maildramon had gambled on this slender thread of hope. Though taken by surprise, the onlookers could only watch as the surging pillar of light descended toward the depths of the crater.
No one knew whether Petermamon could withstand this assault. Astaramon did not know, Leomon did not know, neither did the other Digimon and humans, and even Maildramon himself did not know.
At this moment, driven by extreme hunger, Petermamon's berserk state had peaked. As Maildramon's attack arrived, Petermamon made no attempt to dodge—in truth, evasion was impossible—and instead met the onslaught head-on, her Rujesta Rake whirling furiously in a frantic dance.
Astonishingly, under Petermamon's ferocious assault, even Maildramon's Over-powered Death Crusher was temporarily unable to subdue her, held at bay just above the frenzied Digimon's head.
This was because of the vast disparity in baseline attributes between Maildramon and Petermamon. Had their base stats been evenly matched, even Petermamon could not have blocked this single Over-powered Death Crusher in such a manner.
"Boom!" Yet, this attack was, after all, the result of Maildramon exhausting his every resource, staking his all, and calculating the sole remaining path to victory. Powerful though Petermamon was, she had not reached a level where she could completely ignore Maildramon's ultimate strike.
"Boom!" In the end, despite the formidable nature of Petermamon's defense, her figure was completely swallowed by Maildramon's Over-powered Death Crusher. The shockwave slammed into the base of the crater, producing a deafening roar accompanied by billowing wisps of smoke.
"Sigh..." Watching this spectacle, Astaramon could not help but let out a sigh. When all was said and done, Petermamon was at fault for allowing herself to be driven to such a state by a weaker Maildramon. However, the greater error lay with Astaramon himself, who had severely miscalculated Petermamon's capabilities. If blame were to be assigned, Astaramon could not escape his share.
"Hah... hah..." Having completed his attack, Maildramon stood suspended in mid-air, panting heavily. The bio-cannon at his waist had shattered entirely. In other words, his Death Crusher was no longer usable. If Petermamon possessed even the slightest strength left to fight, Maildramon would likely face defeat.
Furthermore, the digital energy within his body had been depleted by more than ninety percent. Even if the bio-cannon had remained intact, Maildramon lacked the capacity to launch any further powerful attacks. At this moment, Maildramon might even lose a fight against a Rookie-level Digimon that had not yet reached its peak comprehensive combat power.
The others on the field silently gazed into the deep crater. Although Maildramon had not absorbed Petermamon's data—implying that she might not yet be dead—being alive and being grievously wounded amounted to the same thing. The only difference was that a heavy injury simply required one more decisive blow to finish.
Still, since she was not dead, the onlookers waited to see whether Petermamon had merely sustained minor injuries, or if she was severely wounded yet retained the strength to counterattack. Regardless of which it was, Petermamon still held a chance at victory, especially considering that Maildramon's condition was far from optimal.
As these thoughts crossed their minds, the crater finally stirred.
