Chapter 60: Like a God of Slaughter
"Boss, calling boss! Something's happened, the target is being attacked, twenty or thirty people, it's quite a spectacle!" Su Muqing called Chen Deyong over the walkie-talkie while following the commotion.
Lu Feng shielded Xiao Xiao behind him, squaring off against the approaching thugs.
Su Muqing caught up from behind, pointed at the gang hacking at Lu Feng, and shouted, "Police! Everyone, stop right there!"
At her words, everyone froze. The thugs turned to see Su Muqing was really in uniform, and several hesitated.
"What now? The police are here!"
The leader barked, "Do it! We've got Big Waterpipe backing us up. If anything goes wrong, there's hush money and someone to bail us out. Hack that bastard to death!"
This instantly steadied the group's nerves. With ferocious shouts, they swung their blades at Lu Feng.
Su Muqing realized her authority as a police officer was useless here. Rolling up her sleeves, she charged in from behind, kicking down thugs left and right, forcing her way to Lu Feng's side and standing with him, shielding Xiao Xiao.
"What are you doing here?" Lu Feng groaned at the sight of Su Muqing. One little tagalong was trouble enough—now there was a bigger one.
"Don't worry, leave your back to me!" Su Muqing braced herself, speaking with a heroic air.
"Leaving my back to you might be scarier," Lu Feng muttered doubtfully.
"Don't underestimate me, I’m trained!" Su Muqing shook her fists indignantly.
"Did you call the police before charging in?" Lu Feng asked.
"I radioed Captain Chen."
"And then?"
"He hasn’t answered yet."
"You couldn’t just call emergency services?" Lu Feng was exasperated.
"Police calling the police—it feels a bit..." Su Muqing was uncertain.
"You’re something else!"
"So are you!"
...
"Are you here for a comedy routine? Done yet? Chop those two bastards to pieces!"
A dozen blades slashed toward them. Lu Feng grabbed a thug’s wrist, squeezed hard, snatched the machete, and swung it back, deflecting another attacker’s knife.
Su Muqing gave a sharp cry and kicked away a thug lunging from the side.
"We're breaking out. The rear is yours!" Lu Feng shouted, gripping the machete and charging forward, felling an onrushing thug with a single blow.
A wretched scream echoed, blood spraying. This group was utterly ruthless, aiming for vital spots, unafraid of killing.
Seeing this, Lu Feng didn’t hold back, every swing swift and merciless—each strike dropping a foe.
The alley filled with screams; the stench of blood thickened the air.
Su Muqing, watching Lu Feng wield his blade, was momentarily stunned. She’d always thought Lu Feng was just a scoundrel with some martial arts and traditional medicine skills, but now, seeing his silhouette hacking through the crowd, she felt an unexplainable aura of a true hero about him.
Clang, clang!
As they neared the alley’s end, Lu Feng had lost count of how many times he’d swung his blade. The edge was dented and blunt, hacking into flesh with the dullness of a saw. The thugs’ screams grew all the more miserable.
While Su Muqing hesitated, a machete suddenly slashed down from her left rear. Xiao Xiao saw it, shut her eyes, and screamed, tears streaming down her face.
Lu Feng spun and stabbed, ramming the dull knife into the attacker’s shoulder. Flesh burst open, and the thug howled in agony.
"What are you doing? Take Xiao Xiao and get out of here!" Lu Feng yanked Su Muqing, pushing Xiao Xiao toward her.
Su Muqing snapped out of it, grabbed Xiao Xiao, and dashed out of the alley.
Lu Feng grabbed another blade to cover their retreat, cutting down anyone in pursuit. Blood soaked his clothes, his murderous aura thick as a god of slaughter.
At last, the few remaining thugs still standing stared at Lu Feng blocking the alley’s mouth, too terrified to approach.
Lu Feng stood there, gripping the blade, glaring coldly at them. The thugs, cowed by his murderous presence, even retreated a few steps.
Seeing their courage broken, Lu Feng tossed the machete away and turned to chase after Su Muqing and Xiao Xiao.
On the roadside, Su Muqing flagged down a taxi. As they tried to get in, the driver saw Lu Feng covered in blood and, afraid of trouble, refused to take them.
Su Muqing, furious, flashed her temporary police ID and shoved several hundred-yuan bills at the driver, who finally let them board.
Back at the Wenhua Community, Xiao Xiao finally broke down, sitting on the sofa clutching a pillow, sobbing uncontrollably.
Lu Feng went into the bathroom, stripped, and washed off the blood.
Su Muqing followed him in, looking him over. "Are you hurt? Do you need me to apply medicine?"
"I'm not hurt," Lu Feng shook his head.
"That much blood and not a scratch?" Su Muqing was skeptical.
"It's all someone else’s," Lu Feng replied, wiping his arm with his damp shirt. The worst was a shallow cut on his left arm, barely breaking the skin—not even worth treating.
Once clean, Lu Feng came out, knelt in front of Xiao Xiao, and gently stroked her cheek. "It's all over now."
Sobbing, Xiao Xiao dropped the pillow and threw her arms around Lu Feng’s neck, crying harder.
At that moment, the lock clicked.
Lu Feng turned warily.
The door opened. Chen Lan entered, a handbag over her arm. She saw Lu Feng holding her weeping daughter, blood stains on the floor.
She rushed over, worried. "What happened?"
Su Muqing came out of the bathroom and answered casually, "This crook was attacked—a mob of twenty or thirty, it was quite a spectacle."
"Was it the Lianhong Society again?" Chen Lan asked, anxious and a little guilty. Anything involving Lianhong Society usually traced back to her.
Lu Feng nodded. "Go wash Xiao Xiao’s face and comfort her."
Chen Lan sat beside her daughter, stroked her forehead, and gently wiped her sweat with a towel. "Be good, Xiao Xiao. Come, let Mommy wash you up."
Only then did Xiao Xiao let go of Lu Feng and cling to her mother instead.
Chen Lan carried her to the bathroom, gave her a quick wash, changed her clothes, and brought her back to the room.
A while later, Chen Lan returned and sat beside Lu Feng, covering her face with her hands. "Is it the Lianhong Society refusing to let us go?"
"This time, I think I was the target. Still, be careful—they probably won’t bother you on purpose," Lu Feng said after a moment.
"I’m sorry. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have gotten into trouble with them," Chen Lan said guiltily.
At that moment, the doorbell rang.
Everyone inside tensed, glancing warily at the door. It was already eight o’clock, and Chen Lan didn’t know many people here. Who could it be?
Lu Feng gestured for Chen Lan to stay seated, then went to the door and cracked it open.
Four police officers stood outside. The leader saw the door open and called out, "Are you Lu Feng?"
"I am," Lu Feng replied.
"We received a report. You are suspected of intentional assault. Come to the station with us to assist in the investigation."
