Chapter 140: Turmoil in Wumang Town (Part III)
Ji Mo and Su Ye were utterly astonished. Neither of them could have imagined that the flames of this inexplicable conflict would somehow spread to them. Xiao Jin, perched on Ji Mo’s shoulder, could not help letting out a mocking snort. It gazed at the three people as though they were idiots, its twin whiskers curling slightly as it sneered, “Are you two lunatics? You bite anyone you happen to catch. First you accuse those three of being spies, and now, for no reason at all, you’ve turned your weapons on us.”
Xiao Jin had always possessed a mouth capable of angering the living back to death and the dead back to life. Seeing that young man and woman inexplicably directing their hostility toward them, it naturally could not hold back. The instant Xiao Jin spoke, Ji Mo knew trouble had arrived. But this was hardly the time to settle accounts with it. She could only glare fiercely at the creature before shifting her attention to the people who had so absurdly tried to pin the blame on her.
Sure enough, the moment Xiao Jin finished speaking, the expressions of the three people at the table darkened. The beautiful girl in red, in particular, glared at Ji Mo and the others with eyes that seemed ready to spit fire.
The young man in white raised his brows sharply, his face filled with murderous intent. He rose and, with a flash of movement, appeared before Ji Mo and the others’ table. Looking at Ji Mo and Su Ye as though they were already dead, he asked, “Is this your beast companion?”
“Yes.” Ji Mo helplessly raised her head and answered.
The instant she looked up, her exquisitely beautiful face was fully revealed before the young man in white. Upon seeing her features clearly, his eyes dimmed slightly, and a concealed flash of amazement passed through them. Ji Mo, meanwhile, could not help frowning.
“Hmph. What a lack of upbringing. You actually let a mere beast companion become so arrogant and unruly. Its behavior alone is enough to show that neither of you belongs to our race. Speak. Why have you infiltrated this place?”
The amazement in the young man’s eyes vanished in an instant. Then his gaze shifted slightly, and he promptly slapped an enormous accusation upon them.
“Heh heh. See what happens when you insist on keeping a low profile? The consequence is getting branded as a member of another race.”
After the young man in white finished speaking, Ji Mo did not even raise an eyebrow. She merely picked up the cup on the table and began sipping her tea slowly, treating his words as nothing more than hot air. Xiao Jin, however, seemed determined to make matters worse. It gave two strange chuckles and spoke with undisguised glee.
“You caused this mess. You deal with it yourself.”
Ji Mo cast it a sidelong glance and replied coolly.
“What do you mean, I caused trouble? I only said that because I couldn’t stand watching them randomly pin accusations on you!”
Xiao Jin snapped angrily.
“I’m talking to you! Are you deaf?”
Seeing that Ji Mo and Xiao Jin had entirely ignored him and were chattering among themselves, the young man’s anger intensified. He slammed his palm onto their table with a bang, smashing one side of it apart.
“Waiter, you saw that. He was the one who broke the table. If you want someone to pay for it, remember to collect the money from him.”
Ji Mo hurriedly called out to the waiter, who had just finished clearing away the bowls and chopsticks and had not yet gone far. She was penniless at the moment, and to avoid being cheated later, it was best to make the matter clear in advance.
“Let fists do the talking. Whoever has the bigger fist wins, and then the loser pays for the damage.”
The waiter replied without even turning his head.
Ji Mo and Xiao Jin were both stunned. What a ferocious logic! Was this really an inn?
Once she recovered, Ji Mo glanced at Xiao Jin, her meaning obvious: Hurry up. You caused this, so deal with it yourself.
Xiao Jin glared at her unhappily but did not waste any more words. It leaped from her shoulder and hovered in front of the young man, no more than two feet away. Staring at him coldly, it said, “Leave the money for the broken table and get lost.”
“You!”
The young man flew into a rage and struck at Xiao Jin with one palm.
Xiao Jin was only the size of a fist, and there was no way to tell what strength it possessed. Ji Mo was merely an early Core Formation cultivator, while Su Ye, seated opposite her, was at the peak of the Core Formation realm. Yet both of them were completely disregarded, because the young man in white was himself a Nascent Soul cultivator.
“Bang!”
Who could have expected that the instant he thrust out his palm, he would suddenly feel an overwhelming force crash into him? In the next moment, his entire body was sent flying.
What was even more astonishing was that, as he flew backward, he did not collide with a single object. He was struck directly toward the entrance. Geng Qing and the others standing outside were startled and hurriedly scattered.
Only then did the young man crash heavily onto the solid ground with a bang, sending dust billowing everywhere.
After dealing with him, Xiao Jin nimbly leaped back onto Ji Mo’s shoulder and called out to the waiter, who was watching from a distance, “Innkeeper, take a look. Our fists aren’t bad, are they? You can collect the money for the broken table from him yourself.”
Xiao Jin’s action left not only the waiter speechless with shock, but also the countless diners around them staring wide-eyed. The young man in white might not have been very likable, but his strength was by no means weak. He was a genuine mid-stage Nascent Soul cultivator, yet before Xiao Jin, he had been unable to resist even once.
Just who were the man and woman at that table?
The others were not the only ones stunned by Xiao Jin. Ji Mo herself was so shocked that her mouth fell open. More precisely, although Xiao Jin had been with her for several decades, she had never seen it fight with all its strength and had no idea what its actual battle prowess was.
Only Su Ye and Jin Lie, who was sprawled across him and sleeping soundly, showed no surprise whatsoever.
“Uncle Bai, what rank of demon beast is that?”
The girl in red, who shared the table with the young man in white, flashed a cold glint in her eyes. She turned her gaze toward the black-bearded old man seated beside her and asked.
“If I am not mistaken, it is a Core Formation demon beast—in other words, a peak third-rank demon beast.”
The black-bearded elder, addressed as Uncle Bai, carefully examined Xiao Jin several times before answering.
“A third-rank Lightning Beast? How can it be so strong?”
The red-clad girl’s beautiful eyes widened.
“I cannot say for certain. The fur of this Lightning Beast is entirely golden, so it is clearly a mutated variety. However, the reason Mu Chuan was sent flying so easily is mainly that he underestimated his opponent.”
The old man studied Xiao Jin from head to toe, his eyes flickering thoughtfully. Mu Chuan was naturally the name of the young man in white whom Xiao Jin had just sent flying.
“Uncle Bai, could you help Brother Mu Chuan? The origins of this strange man and woman are indeed highly suspicious. They may truly be from the Demon Realm. Think about it—over all these years, have we ever heard of a sect in this region being destroyed? Yet now, just after the Jinmu Palace was annihilated, these two appear. Our sect sent us here precisely to investigate the matter. What do you think...?”
The red-clad girl’s eyes rolled rapidly as she spoke to the black-bearded elder.
She had made no effort to lower her voice, so not only could everyone nearby hear her words, Ji Mo and the others heard them as well. Ji Mo studied the black-bearded elder for a few moments and found that she could not see through him. She then asked Xiao Jin telepathically, “Xiao Jin, what is this man’s cultivation level? Can you see through him?”
To be continued...
