Chapter 72: No One Knows What Happened That Night
With this new understanding, Jiang Xiaoxiao suddenly had an idea. She strode boldly into the company. Unexpectedly, when she saw Gao Cen, she was immediately informed that she had been dismissed. She didn’t even have a chance to meet Bo Jin Xiu. All she could do was create a scene.
In the end, Bo Jin Xiu actually allowed her inside. If it were anyone else, they would surely have been thrown out long ago. Her place in his heart was truly different.
Jiang Xiaoxiao was not blind to this fact. In appearance, learning, and temperament, perhaps she was not as good as Jiang Ci You. But she possessed something Jiang Ci You did not: authenticity and spontaneity.
Most noble daughters raised by family tradition were well-mannered, virtuous, and knew propriety and shame. Yet, after meeting enough of such women, one inevitably found them dull. All the wealthy heirs she knew had elegant girlfriends from good families, but what they sought outside were wild, fiery little vixens.
She understood these men’s psychology all too well. Now, she had another role to play—loyalty.
She knew Bo Jin Xiu’s family was complicated, rife with intrigue, scheming, and manipulation, making genuine emotion a rare treasure for him. These qualities were precious to him.
Sure enough, Bo Jin Xiu asked calmly, “So, Second Miss Jiang is here to seek justice for your friends?”
Jiang Xiaoxiao put on an air of uprightness. “Of course. If you want to vent your anger for Jiang Ci You, you can take it out on me. I’m the one responsible; it has nothing to do with my friends. I’m willing to bear all the consequences.”
Bo Jin Xiu had a faint smile, but his gaze was cold and impersonal. He replied indifferently, “Second Miss Jiang, you have the heart of a heroine.”
His words were full of sarcasm.
But Jiang Xiaoxiao, living in her own fantasies, failed to notice. She even felt a little proud. As expected, Bo Jin Xiu was seeing her in a new light.
“But since Second Miss Jiang is so loyal and righteous, why were you so heartless and ungrateful toward the foster mother who raised you for twenty years? You knew she acted in self-defense, yet refused to testify in court, watching her be sentenced to life imprisonment?”
Jiang Xiaoxiao’s face froze, as if stunned. She hadn’t expected Bo Jin Xiu to suddenly mention Yin Ruyun.
But quickly, she guessed the reason. It must have been Jiang Ci You, seeking to ruin her image in Bo Jin Xiu’s eyes, who told him about it.
Jiang Xiaoxiao, furious, said, “Did Jiang Ci You tell you that? My dear sister is always eager to smear me.”
No one knew what happened that night. Jiang Ci You might know something, but only a fraction. She wasn’t afraid.
Bo Jin Xiu spoke calmly, “It has nothing to do with Miss Jiang. I happened to come across a video. Second Miss Jiang, perhaps you should take a look.”
Bo Jin Xiu produced a phone and played a video.
Jiang Xiaoxiao’s heart was uneasy, but she still leaned in to watch.
The video was from the night Zhao Dacheng was killed. It showed her fleeing the scene.
Jiang Xiaoxiao’s face turned pale. “How did you get this video?”
Bo Jin Xiu spoke, but didn’t answer her question. Instead, he said, “The video is timestamped. You were at the scene when it happened. Neighbors saw Zhao Dacheng abusing both you and your foster mother. This is enough to prove your foster mother acted in self-defense. Yet, in both the police investigation and the trial, Second Miss Jiang, you never appeared to defend her. I find this very puzzling.”
“From what I’ve learned, Yin Ruyun, though not wealthy, was very good to you, even spending a large sum to send you to a noble school.”
Indeed, she attended a noble high school in the capital. It was there she first heard the title of ‘Prince of Beijing’s Circle.’ Bo Jin Xiu probably didn’t know she had seen him back then and fallen for him at first sight.
Jiang Xiaoxiao was at a loss for words, feeling guilty inside. Only Yin Ruyun knew what really happened that night, and Yin Ruyun would never reveal it, because she owed her.
She didn’t testify in court—partly because she didn’t want people to know she was the daughter of a murderer, and partly because she hoped Yin Ruyun would stay in prison forever. That way, she’d never have to worry again.
But now, Bo Jin Xiu had intervened, holding evidence of her presence at the scene.
If she continued to deny it, she would confirm her image as a heartless, ungrateful daughter who abandoned her foster mother—a reputation she couldn’t allow Bo Jin Xiu to believe.
Suddenly, Jiang Xiaoxiao crouched down, covered her face, and began to sob.
“Yes, I was at the scene that night. It’s not that I refused to testify, but my foster mother wouldn’t let me. She said she’d made many mistakes in her life and wanted to repent in prison. I tried to persuade her many times, but in the end, I had to respect her wishes.”
“I feel terrible. That night was horrifying—seeing her kill my foster father with my own eyes. I was terrified and panicked. My foster mother was truly good to me; she didn’t want me involved, so she told me to leave.”
“I never ignored her fate. I’ve always hoped she could be released soon. But she felt her sins were too great and didn’t deserve freedom.”
“My foster father was a brute, always beating and cursing us. My foster mother did everything she could to protect me; she was sincere.”
By the end, Jiang Xiaoxiao’s tears flowed like rain. In fact, when she said the last sentence, a trace of genuine emotion appeared.
Yin Ruyun really was good to her—so accommodating. Though their family was poor, she tried to fulfill her every material wish, even buying her expensive shoes. But all of that was owed to her.
She had switched two children at birth, and the guilt ate at her. She was meant to be a rich heiress, but grew up in poverty. This was the debt she owed.
Now, Jiang Xiaoxiao desperately recalled every kindness Yin Ruyun had shown her, just to make her tears appear more genuine.
Bo Jin Xiu spoke coldly, “So that’s how it is. I almost thought Second Miss Jiang was distancing herself from her foster mother to protect her own reputation.”
Jiang Xiaoxiao hurried to reply, “I’m not that kind of person. I won’t meddle in the feud between my mother and foster mother. My foster mother was good to me. If she’s released, I’ll surely care for her in her old age.”
Bo Jin Xiu continued, “In that case, I trust Second Miss Jiang will be willing to appeal to the higher court and clear your foster mother’s name.”
Jiang Xiaoxiao was utterly stunned.
He wanted her to appeal and exonerate Yin Ruyun? Wouldn’t the whole world then know she was the daughter of a murderer? Besides, Yao Shulan hated Yin Ruyun most. If she rushed to appeal for Yin Ruyun, Yao Shulan would be furious.
Of course, most importantly—
Jiang Xiaoxiao was baffled. Why did Bo Jin Xiu care so much about Yin Ruyun’s case?
