Chapter Six: Captured
An energetic elderly man was sitting at his desk, examining something intently. Suddenly, the phone on his desk rang.
He picked it up. “Hello?”
“Grandpa, help me! I’ve been caught,” came a girl’s voice from the other end.
“Where are you?”
“At the police station?”
“I’ll send Ling Song to rescue you. When you get back, you’d better give me a proper explanation!” The old man hung up, clearly annoyed.
On the other end, Han Shanshan stuck out her tongue. “Grandpa’s going to scold me again! Don’t worry, uncle, I’ve called my grandpa to come save us.”
“Quiet!” barked a policeman, glaring at her.
The old man picked up the phone again and dialed another number.
“Elder Han, what’s the matter?” came a brisk voice.
“Shanshan’s been taken to the police station. Go see what’s happened.”
“Understood!” The conversation was direct and decisive, without a wasted word.
At the police station, Ye Feng was escorted straight to an interrogation room. He was pressed against the window, his hands cuffed to the protective bars. The position was deeply uncomfortable; left too long, it was worse than being beaten.
A man in a suit entered.
“Still on duty, Young Shen?” The policeman behind him grinned.
“Yes, Yunyun and I were just about to get off work, but ran into someone as blind as this. I’m here to take a look.” The man shot Ye Feng a vicious glare.
“Let’s start the interrogation,” Young Shen said impatiently, seating himself. These formalities always felt like a nuisance.
The group sat at the table opposite Ye Feng; a desk lamp shone directly on him, making it impossible to see the faces in front of him.
This was nothing like the interrogations shown on TV, where the suspect sat comfortably in a chair. Ye Feng was suspended at the window, given special attention.
“Name?”
“Ye Feng.”
“Gender?”
“Can’t you tell?”
“Answer properly.”
“Male.”
“Why did you fight?”
“That guy deserved it.”
“All right, turn off the camera.” Young Shen glanced at the corner camera, and once it was confirmed off, the desk lamp was also switched off. At that moment, someone entered from outside.
Ye Feng glanced over. It was—Chen Da!
Chen Da entered and glared at Ye Feng, then a smile curled at his lips.
“Cousin!”
“You’re pathetic, getting beaten by this brat? I heard there were more than ten of you. How disgraceful,” Young Shen said with disdain.
“Cousin, you may not know, but this guy can fight. Still, I’d like to see what he does now.”
“Good, I’ll leave this to you. Don’t let anything fatal happen! I’m going to check how Yunyun’s interrogation of that girl is going.” With that, Young Shen strode out.
“Sure!”
The iron door of the interrogation room clanged shut.
Chen Da approached Ye Feng, smiling broadly.
“You were arrogant just now, weren’t you?”
“Was I? Did I look handsome?” Ye Feng showed no concern.
Chen Da clenched his fist and punched Ye Feng hard in the chest. For most, such a blow would have elicited a cry, but Ye Feng only shook his head lightly. “That’s not much strength. Did you skip dinner? Or did you use it all up on that woman?”
“I was just warming up. Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of you. Even if my fists aren’t enough, we have plenty of tools here.” With that, a steel pipe slid out from Chen Da’s sleeve.
“Hey, you’re not really going to do this, are you?” Ye Feng could take a hit, but he wasn’t invincible.
“Did you think I was playing house with you? Today I’ll teach you a lesson: it’s not about how well you fight, but how strong your backing is! And here’s some good news—when your little girlfriend’s interrogation is over, I’ll bring her in and have my way with her right in front of you. Then you’ll see if I’m man enough.”
“Scum!”
...
In another interrogation room, the atmosphere was entirely different. A beautiful woman in uniform sat at the desk, her knee-length skirt revealing hints of black stockings, her ample chest almost a weapon in itself.
Across from her sat Han Shanshan.
“Sister Police Flower, you’re so pretty! If that sleazy uncle saw you, he’d definitely try to hit on you.”
The woman Han Shanshan called Police Flower frowned at the adorable girl in front of her. How could such a cute girl have committed a crime?
Beside her, a less attractive policewoman barked, “Quiet! Don’t speak unless you’re asked.”
Han Shanshan shrugged and fell silent.
“What’s your name?” Police Flower asked gently.
“Sister, I’m Han Shanshan.”
“Gender?”
“Girl.”
“What did you do?”
“We didn’t do anything wrong. That man called Chen Da tried to harass me, and the uncle helped teach him a lesson. You’ve arrested the wrong people,” Han Shanshan said, aggrieved.
“Chen Da?” Police Flower frowned and murmured a few words to the officer beside her.
“Is Chen Da the chief’s nephew?” Police Flower sensed trouble.
“Yes, he’s been brought in many times, but always released in the end. And...” The officer started to say more, but another officer coughed, and she fell silent.
At that moment, Shen Yingjie entered.
“Yunyun, how’s it going here? Hurry up, so I can take you home,” Shen Yingjie said.
The other two policewomen stood up. “Young Shen!”
He waved them back to their seats.
Police Flower was impatient. “No need, I’ll go home myself. I’ve only just started!”
“That slow? We’ve finished our side already,” Shen Yingjie boasted.
“Finished? Was Ye Feng released?” Han Shanshan piped up, suspecting they’d interrogated Ye Feng. She called him ‘brother Ye Feng’—no one else knew who she meant, but he couldn’t hear her anyway.
“Released? He’ll be detained for a few days for fighting,” Young Shen said with relish. Here, he could decide others’ fates as he pleased. Seeing Han Shanshan, Shen Yingjie was taken aback; she was a different type from Yunyun, all innocence and charm.
“You must have made a mistake, sister. Brother Ye Feng is innocent,” Han Shanshan said, tears welling up in her eyes, making her look delicate and pitiful.
Shen Yingjie grew impatient. “Stop crying and tell us what happened so we can finish and go home.”
“Mr. Shen, please leave. I’m working right now. Don’t interfere,” Yunyun said, pushing him out.
“It’s all my fault! I got uncle into trouble!” Han Shanshan began to cry.
“Don’t cry. Tell me everything that happened, and I’ll clear his name.”
“Really?”
“Of course!”
...
“Young Shen, Officer Man is known for her fairness. If she gets involved, Ye Feng will surely be released,” a junior officer said to Shen Yingjie.
“That’s perfect. It’ll take her a few days to investigate, and isn’t that enough time for us to torment him? By then, Yunyun can close the case, and we’ll have killed two birds with one stone!” Shen Yingjie smiled smugly, clearly experienced in such matters.
Suddenly, the sound of cars echoed outside. Several white military-green jeeps barreled into the station, and four or five burly men in uniform followed Ling Song out of the vehicles!
Ling Song marched in with his men.
The police at the entrance tried to stop them. “What are you doing?”
“Where’s Han Shanshan? The little girl you arrested tonight!”
The police had never seen such a spectacle—normally just a squad of officers on practice, and their guns never loaded. “She’s in the interrogation room.”
“Take me there!” Ling Song and his men headed straight for Han Shanshan’s interrogation room, running into Shen Yingjie outside.
“Who are you?”
“You’re not qualified to know. Is Han Shanshan inside?”
“Do you know who I am? My father is—”
“I don’t care who your father is! Get lost!” Ling Song, standing at 185 centimeters, was intimidating enough, not to mention the squad of soldiers behind him.
Shen Yingjie fell silent under their glare.
Ling Song pushed open the door and strode inside.
Han Shanshan, seeing her rescuer, cried out excitedly. “Brother Ling Song!”
Police Flower Man Yunyun stood up. “How dare you barge into an interrogation room?”
Han Shanshan, afraid her powerful rescuer would scare Police Flower, hurried to explain, “Brother Ling Song, Police Flower sister is a good person.”
Ling Song pulled out a small identification booklet and handed it over. “Here’s my credentials. We’re taking her with us.”
Man Yunyun was relieved; this adorable girl would be safer with them than left to Young Shen’s gang. From the first moment she saw her, she liked her.
“Brother Ling Song, save Uncle Ye Feng, please! He was arrested for helping me.”
“Where is Ye Feng?” Ling Song asked.
Man Yunyun pointed outside at Shen Yingjie.
Ling Song’s eyes flashed with murderous intent. “Where is Ye Feng?”
“He...I...I don’t know!” Shen Yingjie knew Chen Da was beating Ye Feng at that very moment; if discovered, his own fate wouldn’t be pleasant.
“He’s lying! He just said the interrogation was finished!” Han Shanshan was getting anxious.
“Are you going to talk or not?” Ling Song grabbed Shen Yingjie and lifted him off the ground.
“I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you. He’s over there.”
Ling Song dragged him toward Ye Feng’s interrogation room, Han Shanshan following close behind.
“Let’s see how arrogant you are now! Let’s see if you’re so tough!” The sound of blows echoed from outside the interrogation room.
