Chapter Twenty-Four: Giving Her an "Injection"?
Ye Feng’s eyes lit up as he saw an SUV approach from the side. He waved frantically toward the vehicle.
Suddenly, Chen Xinyi saw a young man ahead of the car, waving at them with someone on his back.
“They look like they need help,” Chen Xinyi said. “Is that girl on his back sick? We should help them.”
“Shut up!” the man in black snapped.
The car drew closer to Ye Feng, the accelerator pressed mercilessly to the floor.
“What are you doing? They’re right in front of us! Are you trying to run them over?” Chen Xinyi exclaimed, gesturing wildly at Ye Feng.
“They have no one to blame but themselves. Just their bad luck,” the man in black replied coldly.
“What do you mean bad luck? If you don’t want to pick them up, just go around! Why run them down?” Chen Xinyi fumed, forgetting she was a hostage.
“They’re standing in the middle of the road! How am I supposed to go around?”
“You could stop the car and ask them to move! Just say you’re busy kidnapping and can’t take them, and that’s that. Why kill someone?” Chen Xinyi retorted.
“Rich people, honestly! If you don’t want to give us a lift, fine, but do you have to try to kill me?” Ye Feng muttered, flexing his fists as the car closed in.
The driver slammed the accelerator to the floor.
“Stop!” Ye Feng shouted, striking the hood with his palm. The car rolled forward a short distance, forcing Ye Feng back a few steps before finally coming to a halt.
The man in black was shocked—he hadn’t expected anyone to stop a speeding car like that. Clearly, this was no ordinary person.
Chen Xinyi’s eyes widened in awe. “Wow, he’s strong! We’re saved!”
The man in black removed his mask and glared at Chen Xinyi. “One more word from you and you’ll die a miserable death.” He lowered the window.
Chen Xinyi knew this was her only chance—if he took her away, she’d be doomed.
“Hey, what’s your problem, standing in the middle of the road?” The man in black pretended to be just a passing driver.
Ye Feng was startled to see someone dressed in black in broad daylight. “My friend’s very ill, brother. Could you give us a lift?”
“No, I’m in a hurry,” the man replied.
“What a coincidence, so am I,” Ye Feng said, as Chen Xinyi mouthed silently from the side, “Save me!”
“I really am in a hurry. Why don’t you wait here and see if another car comes by?” Judging by Ye Feng’s strength, the man in black wasn’t sure he could handle him, so he had no intention of making the first move.
“In a hurry? Eager to sell this pretty girl?” A cold glint appeared in Ye Feng’s eyes.
“What did you say?” The man in black, realizing he’d been exposed, quietly drew a knife.
Ye Feng instantly locked his throat. “What are you trying to do?”
The man in black never even saw him move. Beads of sweat broke out on his forehead.
Chen Xinyi, seeing the man subdued, shouted, “Help me! Brother, please save me!”
“Get out,” Ye Feng said coolly, his tone relaxed, but the man in black was terrified.
The man in black slowly opened the door and stepped out.
Chen Xinyi hurried out as well, hiding behind Ye Feng.
“Kid, I advise you to mind your own business! Our master is not someone you can afford to cross, even if you are strong,” the man in black threatened.
“I told you, I’m in a hurry,” Ye Feng replied, not interested in wasting time. He knocked him out with a single blow.
“Can you drive?” Ye Feng asked Chen Xinyi.
Chen Xinyi hesitated, then nodded firmly. “Yes!”
“Drive.”
It wasn’t long before Ye Feng shouted, “Are you sure you can drive?”
Chen Xinyi looked slightly embarrassed. She rarely drove, and had only been forced into it by Uncle Qinglong. Now, seeing Ye Feng and his companion in need, she said, “Sorry, I was just brought here—I haven’t driven much. But I can do it.”
Ye Feng chuckled dryly. “Some skills you have.”
“Brother, my name is Chen Xinyi. Thank you for saving me. What’s your name?” Chen Xinyi was clearly in a much better mood after being rescued.
“Ye Feng. And this is Xia Ling,” Ye Feng replied briefly. Normally, faced with such a beautiful girl, he would have flirted, but Xia Ling’s condition left him in no mood for that.
“Brother, what’s wrong with this sister?” Chen Xinyi had noticed Xia Ling clinging to Ye Feng’s back from the start.
“She’s been poisoned,” Ye Feng replied, glancing at Xia Ling, his eyes full of pain.
“So where are we going now?”
“To find a small mountain village and their village doctor,” Ye Feng said.
“A small mountain village? Can their doctor cure her?”
“I don’t know,” Ye Feng answered mechanically.
“Ah! There’s no road ahead!” Chen Xinyi suddenly shrieked.
“Get out,” Ye Feng said decisively, pulling Xia Ling from the car and carrying her on his back once more.
Chen Xinyi got out too, gazing longingly at the car. “What about the car?”
“Leave it. Compared to Xia Ling’s life, nothing else matters.”
“That’s such a waste.” Chen Xinyi followed after him. “Still, it was taken by force, so I suppose there’s nothing to regret.”
“That was my car. First the man in black took it, now you’ve taken it,” Chen Xinyi admitted.
“Then stay with it if you want.”
“Forget it, it’s not worth dying for,” Chen Xinyi said, catching up.
“Are you sure you want to come? The mountain path is tough,” Ye Feng warned. With Xia Ling on his back, he couldn’t take care of Chen Xinyi as well.
“It’s fine, I’m not afraid of hardship. My father makes me relive the hard times every month, makes me work,” Chen Xinyi replied.
Ye Feng said nothing more—her city-bred hardships couldn’t compare to this.
“Ye Feng, slow down! Wait for me!” Chen Xinyi pleaded from behind.
“I don’t have time, and neither does Ling. I must find that village as soon as possible. If you can’t keep up, stay behind and feed the wolves,” Ye Feng said coldly.
He wasn’t being heartless—he simply had no choice. He couldn’t slow down for her when Xia Ling could succumb at any moment.
“Are you even human? You’ve been carrying someone for half the day and you’re not tired?” Chen Xinyi, stung by the mention of wolves, ignored the pain in her feet and hurried after him.
“I grew up walking mountain paths and surviving among wild animals. I don’t get tired,” Ye Feng replied.
Chen Xinyi had already discarded her hat and sunglasses. Her hair was loose, sweat-soaked strands clinging to her face, but she still looked lovely. Unfortunately, Ye Feng was in no mood to appreciate her beauty.
Suddenly, there was movement ahead. Ye Feng, instantly alert, focused forward, and Chen Xinyi, sensing danger, hid behind him.
Ye Feng advanced cautiously, getting closer.
Suddenly, a little girl appeared, brandishing a wooden stick and glaring fiercely at a large wolf. Next to the wolf, the girl looked tiny—she couldn’t have been more than five or six, dressed in an oversized, coarse adult coat, her arms and legs covered in bruises.
The wolf inched closer, drooling and growling menacingly. To the wolf, such a small child was the perfect meal. Unable to restrain itself, it leapt.
The girl, terrified, dropped the stick and covered her eyes.
With a dull thud, Ye Feng flashed forward and kicked the adult wolf, sending it flying. Blood trickled from the beast’s mouth as it lay motionless, never to rise again—testament to Ye Feng’s incredible strength.
“Ye Feng, you’re a beast yourself!” Chen Xinyi gasped, stunned. Such a powerful wolf, killed with a single kick.
“Are you alright, little one? Where’s your family?” Chen Xinyi asked, feeling sorry for her.
Ye Feng suspected the girl was a local.
“Show us the way, and I’ll take you home,” Ye Feng said.
The little girl was still trembling from the shock.
Chen Xinyi swept her up into her arms, her voice gentle. “Show us the way, I’ll carry you.”
The girl, at first nervous, soon relaxed and pointed to a small medicine basket on the ground.
Chen Xinyi slung it over her shoulder. The little girl pointed the way.
“Aren’t you tired?” Ye Feng asked.
“Not at all,” Chen Xinyi replied, a maternal instinct awakened by the child.
Soon, a small mountain village appeared before them.
“Take me to your village doctor.”
“My house?” the little girl replied sweetly.
Ye Feng was surprised by the coincidence. “Lead the way.”
The villagers were plain and curious, casting glances at Ye Feng but quickly returning to their tasks.
The little girl led Ye Feng and Chen Xinyi to a small thatched hut.
An old man stood outside, anxiously peering into the distance. Spotting the girl, he cried out, “Little one, where have you been?”
He shuffled over, trembling.
“Grandpa, I went to gather herbs and ran into a big gray wolf, but this brother saved me!” the girl replied happily.
But her grandfather was terrified, clutching her tightly.
“Thank you, young man, for saving her.”
“No need for thanks, sir. But can you help my friend?” Ye Feng asked. He noticed the old man’s gaze wasn’t on him at all.
“Miss, may I ask your name?” the old man asked with a lecherous grin.
Chen Xinyi, repulsed by his demeanor, doubted he could heal anyone.
“Why should I tell you?” she snapped.
Undeterred, the old man turned to Xia Ling. “Young man, you have quite the luck with women!”
Ye Feng was speechless.
“Bring her inside.”
“Poisoned?” The old man saw through it at a glance.
“Can you save her?” Ye Feng asked anxiously.
“I do have a remedy, but this girl is unconscious and can’t take medicine. Her body’s systems are damaged—she might not be able to absorb it,” the old man said, troubled.
“Is there any other way?”
“There is, but…” The old man glanced slyly at Ye Feng and Chen Xinyi.
“No ‘buts’—just say it!” Chen Xinyi urged.
“The method is this: you take the medicine first, let your body neutralize it, then pass it to the girl,” the old man said, staring at Ye Feng.
Ye Feng was bewildered. “How am I supposed to give it to her—spit it into her mouth?”
The old man shook his head slowly, his gaze lingering on Ye Feng’s groin.
Chen Xinyi, catching the look, flushed bright red.
“You lecherous old man! What kind of rotten ideas are these?” she scolded.
Ye Feng licked his lips, looking aggrieved. “There’s no other way. To save Ling, I have to sacrifice myself. As the saying goes, if I don’t go to hell, who will?”
“Shameless!” Chen Xinyi retorted.
