Chapter 137: Chen Huajiang Was Beaten

The moment Zhang Hao and the others left, Gao Yun stepped out into view, her brows tightly furrowed as she stared fixedly after them.
In a small place like Anrong Alley, everyone who came and went knew one another. Any stranger would stand out like a thorn in the eye.
That was even more true of a group as conspicuous as Zhang Hao’s. They made no effort to hide themselves, naturally drawing Gao Yun and the others’ attention.
“It looks like they’re after Chen Huaijiang. This is going to be a serious problem.”
Gao Yun quickly guessed their purpose. After all, only a few days had passed since Zhang Hao’s quarrel with Chen Huaijiang.
With that, she hurried away and ran toward the trauma clinic.
Meanwhile, on Food Street, Chen Huaijiang was making a tour of the area with Er Mao, arranging his next assignment.
“Er Mao, I trust you.”
As soon as he arrived, Chen Huaijiang patted Er Mao on the shoulder, making the latter nod excitedly.
His expression grew solemn as well. He knew Chen Huaijiang was about to entrust him with an “important” task.
“Have people put up supports here and divide the place into rows of sections. Separate them with railings or glass. Leave the entrances and exits clear, and don’t let anyone set up stalls on either side.”
“Once that’s done, you can collect management fees and stall fees. Find more men when the time comes. From now on, I’ll leave this place in your hands.”
Chen Huaijiang gave Er Mao a series of instructions.
The crowds moving back and forth before him, the drifting aromas, and the cries of vendors haggling over their wares stirred his blood.
Food Street had finally reached the point where it could begin making money. Once everything was in order, he planned to use the vacant spaces for ring-toss stalls, balloon-shooting booths, and a children’s amusement area.
Food Street would be about far more than food. The entertainment stalls and accompanying attractions were what would make the real money.
But there was no need to rush those plans. A meal had to be eaten one bite at a time, and a road had to be walked one step at a time.
Er Mao’s face was flushed with excitement as he nodded repeatedly. “All right. I’ll make sure everything gets done properly.”
His heart was pounding. He knew Brother Chen intended to put him in charge of the place and was doing his utmost to support him.
“By the way, don’t recruit any of Black Tiger’s men.”
Seeing his excitement, Chen Huaijiang warned him.
“Don’t worry. I know,” Er Mao hurriedly replied with a nod.
Chen Huaijiang gave him a few more instructions before riding away on his bicycle.
He had barely left the green-shaded path and started toward the main road when four men suddenly sprang out of the woods beside it.
“Brother, that’s him!”
Zhang Hao pointed at Chen Huaijiang, his face alight with excitement and his eyes blazing.

Zhang Hao, walking nearby, shouted, “Get off the bike, damn you! How dare you bully my cousin? Are you tired of living?”
He bawled and cursed as the two men beside him spread out, trying to surround Chen Huaijiang and cut him off.
But Chen Huaijiang had no intention of stopping. He immediately turned his bicycle around and pedaled back the way he had come, accelerating faster and faster.
Yet four more men leaped out behind him, armed with steel pipes and three-edged daggers. They had clearly prepared an ambush, intending to attack him from both sides.
“Stop!”
“Get off the bike, damn you!”
The four men brandished their weapons and shouted threats at Chen Huaijiang.
Naturally, Chen Huaijiang did not stop. Instead, he pedaled harder, charging forward at even greater speed.
“Damn it!”
“Shit, cut him down!”
The four men were startled. The two directly in Chen Huaijiang’s path instinctively dodged to either side, allowing him to burst through.
At the critical moment, however, the thug on the left managed to seize the rear of Chen Huaijiang’s bicycle. He was dragged off his feet and slammed to the ground, screaming as he scraped along the road, but he succeeded in bringing the bicycle to a halt.
“Damn it! Get him!”
“Little Tiger, are you all right? Shit, get him!”
Three men charged at Chen Huaijiang, their weapons raised and their faces twisted with ferocity.
Chen Huaijiang glanced at the dozen or so yards of open space between the two groups. He had originally intended to flee, but now he stopped. He felt he had a chance to fight his way out.
With a sidestep, he avoided the first thug’s steel pipe. Following through with the motion, he drove a right hook into the man’s stomach, doubling him over and nearly sending him crashing to the ground.
Chen Huaijiang then seized him by the head and shoved him forward, blocking the thug on the right as he swung his three-edged dagger.
“How about lending me that machete for a little while?”
Facing the thug in the middle, who was holding the machete, Chen Huaijiang smiled with complete confidence.
The man was bewildered by the question. Before he could react, Chen Huaijiang kicked him in the stomach, then drove his rising knee into the man’s face as he bent forward.
The machete was naturally taken from his hand in the same motion. Chen Huaijiang casually hurled it at the thug on the right, who had finally caught up.
That man held a three-edged dagger, his face savage and his expression vicious. He had clearly intended to deliver a brutal blow to Chen Huaijiang.
But when he saw the spinning machete flying toward him, he was so frightened that he immediately covered his head with both arms. The machete struck his arm, making him sigh in relief.
Fortunately, it had hit him with the back of the blade rather than its edge.
But the moment he lowered his arms, his savage expression turned to terror. A fist was already swelling rapidly in his vision.

With two heavy blows, Chen Huaijiang knocked him to the ground.
By then, Zhang Hao and the other four had caught up. Without a word, Chen Huaijiang turned and ran.
“Shit! Don’t run if you’ve got the guts!”
“Stop right there!”
“We can’t chase him any farther. Food Street is just ahead, and all his people are there.”
The men shouted threats as they pursued him. Zhang Hao grabbed Zhang Hao and brought him to a halt.
Food Street was just ahead, and Zhang Bao and the others were still tending their stalls there.
If Chen Huaijiang reached them and called for help, they would be the ones at a disadvantage.
But at that very moment, Chen Huaijiang stopped. He turned and kicked backward, sending the thug on the left flying through the air.
The thug on the right, however, was an experienced fighter. Knowing Chen Huaijiang would be difficult to handle, he threw away his weapon and lunged at him, locking both arms around him.
“Brother Hao, hurry! Get him! I’ve got him restrained!”
The man was tall and powerfully built. He clamped both arms tightly around Chen Huaijiang from behind, immobilizing him as he shouted excitedly to Zhang Hao and Zhang Hao.
This was the most common tactic in street fights: never mind the details—just grab hold of the other man first.
That way, neither side could strike properly. At most, both men could roll around in a chaotic struggle on the ground.
In the end, whichever side had more people available to free their hands would win.
Seeing this, Zhang Hao and Zhang Hao broke into excited smiles and hurried forward.
Chen Huaijiang smiled as well. This sort of bear hug was precisely the basic hold that combat instructors in later generations loved to teach their students how to counter. Even some online self-defense instructors who taught women how to fend off attackers liked to use it as an introductory example.
Crack—
Although Chen Huaijiang’s arms were restrained, his hands were not. He reached back and seized the man with a forceful grip between the legs.
“Ahhh!”
The agonized scream rang out, long and trembling, making even Chen Huaijiang shudder slightly.
It was truly a dreadful sound.
“Hurry! Chen Huaijiang’s been attacked!”
“Quickly! That bastard Zhang Hao brought men to beat up Chen Huaijiang!”
At the entrance to Anrong Alley, Gao Yun called out to two senior fellow disciples and rushed over with an anxious expression.
