Chapter 49: If I Had You, I Would Give Birth
Her earlier words were blunt and unmistakably clear—she looked down on illegitimate children, even found them repulsive.
“Shen Shen.” The tense atmosphere was broken by Yang Liqiong’s voice.
Gu Shen Shen raised her hand and pushed Zhou Ci aside. Yang Liqiong stood two or three meters away.
She took a breath and slowly walked over. “Mom, what’s wrong?”
Yang Liqiong’s gaze lingered on Zhou Ci for an unusually long time, full of complicated scrutiny.
“You haven’t come home for several nights. Where have you been staying?” Yang Liqiong’s question caught Gu Shen Shen off guard.
Yet her expression remained cold, otherwise Gu Shen Shen might have believed her mother was genuinely concerned.
“I’m fine, just busy with work. I barely get a few hours of sleep each day.” Gu Shen Shen’s reply was evasive, which only deepened Yang Liqiong's displeasure.
Yang Liqiong’s brows knit together. “I asked where you’re living.”
“The company arranged accommodation,” Gu Shen Shen answered flatly.
Of course, it wasn’t a believable excuse, but at least it was something to say. Fortunately, Zhou Ci’s reputation in Haicheng preceded him—no one would gossip too outrageously about a secretary.
“Mom, I’ll take care of myself. But I sent you some documents before—please take a close look. I think Gu Yanran is too selfish, not suited for important positions or promising projects. I hope you won’t let emotion cloud your judgment.”
Yang Liqiong’s eyes were filled with complexity and confusion.
“What exactly did you do back then?”
Gu Shen Shen smiled lightly. “It’s all in the past. Whatever I did, hasn’t Gu Yanran already told you everything?”
“Gu Shen Shen!” Yang Liqiong had always been a rather cold woman, rarely genuinely angry, but now Gu Shen Shen’s perfunctory attitude had finally provoked her.
Gu Shen Shen nodded in a gesture of compromise. “Fine. I forced Jiang Susu to get an abortion, but I’ve already gone to the temple and prayed for that child’s soul.”
Yang Liqiong’s face was stunned. “You…”
At that moment, Gu Shen Shen was thinking only of the man behind her—Zhou Ci, who had been silently watching her all along. She didn’t want to get tangled up in this with Yang Liqiong.
“Enough, Mom. I’ll explain everything when I have time. Right now, I have something important to deal with.”
Before Yang Liqiong could respond, Gu Shen Shen had already turned and walked toward Zhou Ci.
“All right, let’s stop this. If you’re really upset right now, let’s just leave, okay?” For the first time, Gu Shen Shen spoke to him as if coaxing a child.
Zhou Ci looked at her for a long moment, then took her hand and pulled her away.
After the car stopped in the garage, Gu Shen Shen got out first. She hadn’t walked far before she sensed the man’s hurried footsteps behind her.
As soon as she stepped into the elevator, he caught up from behind, turned her face toward him, and kissed her fiercely.
He was furious, his kisses rough and wild, as if he wanted to devour her whole.
From the elevator to their home, barely a few minutes passed—Gu Shen Shen’s clothes were already in disarray from his impatient hands.
Inside, Zhou Ci pressed her against the door, his slender fingers gripping her arm tightly.
“I like seeing you disgusted by me, yet forced to bow your head. Gu Shen Shen, you’re just as vile.”
His reckless words burst forth, uncontrollable in their anger.
Gu Shen Shen’s ragged breathing gradually calmed. She wanted to say something, but Zhou Ci pressed in again, unwilling to give her a moment to catch her breath.
“Zhou Ci, no!” Gu Shen Shen pushed against him desperately, her face flushed with panic.
“If you get pregnant, you’ll keep the child. If you dare to terminate it, I’ll make sure you regret it!” Zhou Ci’s eyes were black as ink, burning with hatred so intense it seemed he wanted to tear her apart.
