Chapter 47: Your Secretary Is Truly Remarkable
As Gu Shenshen spoke, the people beside her instinctively parted to make way. In recent years, few in Haicheng knew her; though the Gu family’s enterprises now spanned the entire country, in the eyes of these people, they were little more than formidable upstarts. Such individuals were commonplace in Haicheng—who would care about an inconspicuous woman like Gu Shenshen?
“You…” Jiang Susu stammered when she saw Gu Shenshen, as if her tongue had knotted, even stumbling back a step.
Gu Shenshen wore a chic little Chanel jacket; the soft, draping white fabric lent her a gentle air, stripping her of any edge or hostility.
“What are you doing here?” Yang Liqiong was momentarily taken aback; she hadn’t expected to see Gu Shenshen in this place.
Gu Yanran merely watched Gu Shenshen without speaking.
“Let’s disperse, everyone. There’s nothing to see here,” Gu Shenshen said, glancing around with a faint smile to persuade the onlookers. “This is the Mo family’s house, not a street theatre. Put away your curiosity for gossip.”
The crowd quickly thinned, even Jiang Susu turned to leave.
“Miss Jiang, do you remember my warning all those years ago? I told you never to show your face before my mother again. It seems my words meant nothing to you.” Gu Shenshen walked towards her, her gaze cold and scrutinizing.
“Shenshen, this is the Mo family’s birthday banquet, you shouldn’t—” Gu Yanran, who had stood silently by Yang Liqiong’s side all this time, suddenly spoke.
“Shut up,” Gu Shenshen cut her off with an icy glance.
Gu Yanran immediately turned to Yang Liqiong. “Mother, we’re here for the birthday celebration. If Shenshen acts so recklessly, what will the Mo family think of us?”
Yang Liqiong regarded Gu Yanran with indifference, showing no inclination to stop Gu Shenshen.
By now, the crowd had thinned considerably, but many eyes still lingered, including Zhou Ci, who had noticed Gu Shenshen’s absence and was watching from afar.
“She’s not the sort of child who listens to reason. I can’t stop her,” Yang Liqiong said, then looked over at Gu Shenshen.
She knew Jiang Susu well, of course. Yet it was clear that, between Gu Yanran and Gu Shenshen all those years ago, someone had lied.
“Gu Shenshen, don’t push your luck!” Jiang Susu’s voice trembled as she glared at Gu Shenshen, her face betraying unmistakable fear.
Gu Shenshen arched an eyebrow. “Bow and apologize to my mother.”
Jiang Susu hesitated, instinctively glancing at Yang Liqiong. How could she bring herself to bow in front of so many watching eyes?
Gu Yanran frowned, her fingers clenched tight, staring at Gu Shenshen who refused to relent.
Jiang Susu stood rooted to the spot, her face pale as if she’d seen a ghost.
Gu Shenshen leaned close, murmuring into her ear in a voice soft but chilling: “Shall I announce to everyone present that you once carried my father’s illegitimate child?”
Jiang Susu’s head snapped around, her eyes wide with terror and humiliation.
In the end, she bowed deeply to Yang Liqiong and offered a solemn apology.
Throughout, Zhou Ci’s face remained expressionless. In contrast, Pei Wan watched with open amusement.
“Your secretary is quite something,” Pei Wan remarked. “She doesn’t seem the least bit worried that her actions could land you in trouble, or even offend the Mo family.”
Though Gu Shenshen’s beauty was dazzling, she always carried with her an air of reckless ease and ruthless resolve.
Zhou Ci let out a cold laugh. “Ever heard the saying, ‘a dog threatens others by relying on the power of its master’?”
Pei Wan paused, then chuckled. “That’s a bit harsh. Still, a woman like her—what kind of man could ever tame her?”
Zhou Ci suddenly lowered his gaze, his eyes intense and oppressive. “You’re quite talkative today.”
