Chapter 128: Necrophilia of the Deformed
The next morning, the police came to notify us that Fat Lu wanted to see us. After changing our clothes, we were taken to Fat Lu’s office. We weren’t taken to the interrogation room, so I immediately sensed the police’s attitude—they intended to let us go. It shouldn’t be difficult.
Fat Lu’s office was large. The police had given him many honors, and Fat Lu had pasted all of them on the walls. Numerous medals hung on the shelves as well. It’s rare to see a policeman with so many honors. When we entered, Fat Lu was standing in front of the shelves, carefully polishing his medals.
Wang Yazhuo was momentarily stunned. Apart from the shelves and that wall, which were tidy, the rest of the office looked somewhat messy, especially Fat Lu’s desk, piled high with documents scattered everywhere, never cleaned or organized. Seeing us enter, Fat Lu gently put down the medal in his hand and sat behind the desk.
He invited us to sit down, but once seated, the piles of documents on his desk almost obscured his face. Fat Lu didn’t seem to mind; he smiled and explained that he had so many files and case files to review daily that organizing them properly was troublesome. Leaving them like this made it easier for him to find what he needed.
I assumed Fat Lu would immediately begin questioning us about the case, but to my surprise, he suddenly pointed at the wall and shelves, as if worried we might miss his honors, telling us those medals were awarded to him by the high-ranking police officials in Yushi City after solving significant cases.
“Last night, I personally led the team to crack a serious case involving the desecration of a corpse—a substantial achievement. Perhaps, after peeling back the layers, it might turn out to be a murder case with severe social consequences,” Fat Lu continued. We sat quietly in front of his desk, half-listening to his words without speaking.
After more than ten minutes, Fat Lu finally got to the point: “Kid, do you know why I’m showing off my honors to you?”
I shook my head. Fat Lu smiled faintly, the flesh on his face twitching slightly. “On one hand, I see these as honors and should show them to others.” He paused, his smile fading. “On the other hand, I want you to know that I’m formidable. Even if you try to deceive me, you can’t escape my notice.”
I nodded. “Deputy Captain Lu, so?”
Fat Lu waved his hand dismissively. “So, don’t even try to deceive me. Whatever I say, you answer accordingly, got it?” After saying this, he suddenly laughed to himself as if he believed this method was brilliant. He seemed confident that hearing him say this would make us tell the truth.
I nodded in agreement with Fat Lu’s intention, while Wang Yazhuo looked at him as if he were a fool.
Fat Lu pushed aside some documents blocking us and took out some paper money before beginning his questioning. His first question concerned the gun found at the crime scene. He asked if it belonged to us. Naturally, I shook my head in denial and emphasized that we had only gone there to take shelter from the rain.
Fat Lu stared intently at me for a moment and said the gun had already been tested, and the fingerprint analysis results were back. He gave me another chance to answer, but I still shook my head, denying ownership. Under the table, Wang Yazhuo tightly held my hand, clearly nervous.
But soon she relaxed because Fat Lu shrugged and said we hadn’t lied to him after all.
Seeing Fat Lu’s expression, I felt like laughing but held back. He then asked our names, where we were from, and our relationship. We answered truthfully one by one. I said Wang Yazhuo was my friend, and Little Ghost was my adopted younger sister.
Fat Lu hesitated for a moment, then smiled slyly, “You two look more like runaway lovers. That girl—could she be your illegitimate child?”
Wang Yazhuo’s face flushed red. She slammed her hand on the desk and angrily scolded Fat Lu not to talk nonsense. Fat Lu chuckled and said he was just joking. Stretching lazily, he told us to leave our contact information and said if necessary, we might be called back to the station.
Very smoothly, Fat Lu said we could leave.
I hesitated a moment, then smiled. “Deputy Captain Lu, we were brought to the station without explanation. You owe us one.”
Fat Lu stood, poured a glass of water, and calmly asked what explanation we wanted. His face was all smiles. “I have an awards ceremony this afternoon—don’t want to waste time on you. If you want compensation from the department, there won’t be any. But if you want an apology, I can say sorry.”
I also stood. “No compensation needed, but at least tell us what happened last night. Otherwise, when family and friends ask why we were taken to the station, we won’t be able to explain.”
Fat Lu thought for a moment, then gave us a rough outline.
He said the man arrested and brought to the station was Qiu Xiao. Several years ago, he was a top student at a medical university in Yushi City. But about a year ago, after his girlfriend died, he suddenly dropped out and disappeared with her corpse. For that year, Qiu Xiao’s family and the police had been searching for him, and finally found him.
The woman’s body was undergoing autopsy, but the report was not yet out. Fat Lu said, barring any surprises, the corpse was indeed Qiu Xiao’s girlfriend. Her name was Hu Yufang, a pretty girl and Qiu Xiao’s classmate. Both had promising futures—at least one would have become a doctor. But after they started dating, everything changed.
Fat Lu told us that at first, their relationship was very good, envied by many classmates. But later, for unknown reasons, they began frequently quarrelling. About a year ago in winter, Hu Yufang suddenly didn’t return to the dorm for two consecutive nights.
After searching, her body was found in a corner on the dorm building’s rooftop.
Hu Yufang had no family, and no one claimed the body. The medical university had a forensic center; on the night the body was sent to the morgue, it was stolen. The school then discovered that Hu Yufang’s boyfriend, Qiu Xiao, had also disappeared. All signs pointed to Qiu Xiao having taken the body.
Many speculated that Hu Yufang and Qiu Xiao had a major fight before her death. The corpse had no external bleeding. Before the forensic team could examine the body, it was stolen. Many, including the police, suspected Qiu Xiao had murdered Hu Yufang and then taken her body.
Last night’s discovery confirmed the police’s suspicions.
Fat Lu also told me he had personally interrogated Qiu Xiao. Qiu Xiao admitted the body was Hu Yufang’s and that once the autopsy report came out, it would be definitive. Qiu Xiao confessed that, in anger after an argument, he had poisoned Hu Yufang.
But afterward, feeling remorseful, he stole the body, wanting to keep Hu Yufang with him forever.
During the search, the police found many chemicals like formalin used to slow corpse decay. Over the past year, Qiu Xiao claimed he had tried every means to preserve Hu Yufang’s body, but after a year, he ultimately failed to prevent decomposition.
For the entire year, Qiu Xiao had shared a bed with Hu Yufang’s corpse, engaging in intimate acts almost daily—sometimes three or four times a day. Fat Lu laughed suddenly and said, “This kid’s mind has seriously twisted. He says in his eyes, Hu Yufang’s corpse is the most beautiful thing, and he’s willing to sleep with her forever.”
Fat Lu sighed, hoping Qiu Xiao would not be diagnosed with a mental illness. Otherwise, he might escape criminal responsibility, and Fat Lu’s own credit for the case would be severely diminished.
